HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A company in Pennsylvania is getting more than a million dollars in state grants and tax credits to develop an accurate and reliable self-test for COVID-19.

OraSure of Bethlehem, PA already produces accurate self-test for HIV and Ebola.

Company President and CEO Stephen Tang appeared with Governor Tom Wolf and Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine on Tuesday to say they will do the same for coronavirus.

“With no instrumentation needed to interpret the results and no need to transport samples to a lab for analysis, essentially it’s a lab on a swab,” said Tang.

While the test could be available commercially by the end of the year, Dr. Levine says the immediate benefit would be to nursing homes, schools and prisons who need quick results to stop the spread.

Tang says the test could be a “game changer” in the fight against coronavirus and the ultimate goal is to have the test available to anyone at any time.

Ora sure will preserver 233 jobs and will create 177 new ones.
