PA Dept. Of Education Plans On Having Schools Open In Fall

School Lockers

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pennsylvania Department of Education says they are planning to open schools up this fall but are planning for a “worst-case scenario.”

Education Secretary Pedro Rivera told lawmakers on Monday that it is “fully our intent” to reopen schools in the fall.

Schools in PA and across much of the country have been shuttered since mid-March when the coronavirus started to spread.

Rivera says the most important thing is that students, teachers and staff are kept safe.

When schools do reopen, changes will be in place including social distancing if the PA Department of Health still deems it necessary.

There could also be smaller classes sizes or split-schedules where students go to school on different days with other students taking online classes when they are not in school.

The department is also working on helping districts that are uncertain of their budget in 2020-21.
