PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Student debt is a real problem for many Americans, but a new report shows that Pennsylvanians are hit especially hard.
The report from WalletHub shows that PA has the second highest student debt in the country right behind South Dakota,
It also shows that the commonwealth has the 5th highest proportion of students with debt in the country.
Across the U.S. there is $1.5 Trillion in student loan debt and the average loan is about $37,172 nationwide with the amount being closer to $40,000 in PA.
Jill Gonzalez with WalletHub tells KDKA Radio’s Lynne Hayes Freeland that 11 percent of all student loans are either in delinquency or default.
Gonzalez adds that people in other states like New York and California also have large debt but “they’re typically making more too so they’re able to pay that debt back sooner.”
