HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The fight against the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania is getting a $10 million boost from a charity funded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The money will help hospitals improve access to drugs that help addicts and to standardize best practices across the state.

Governor Tom Wolf says the funding from Bloomberg's Vital Strategies charity will help programs already underway.

“This was something that really gives all of us encouragement, that we’re doing the right thing,” said Wolf.

Bloomberg's Vital Strategies charity sites Pennsylvania as a national model for developing programs to treat the opioid epidemic.

Wolf says the funding is also a great psychological boost to state efforts.

“The (American Medical Association) has said Pennsylvania is doing some great things in the area of the opioid epidemic . . . we have turned a corner in terms of deaths,” said Wolf.

The three year initiative will also boost law enforcement training and fund media campaigns to reduce the stigma that keeps many addicts from seeking treatment.
