Bing Liu
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Ross Township Police say the shooting death of a University of Pittsburgh research assistant professor who was working on a coronavirus project had nothing to do with his work surrounding COVID-19.

Bing Liu was shot several times on Saturday afternoon in his home on Elm Court.

Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from "a lengthy dispute regarding an intimate partner."

A man identified as Hao Gu was found dead in his car from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Charlemagne Circle.

Police say Gu shot Liu in the head neck, torso and extremities before he returned to his car and shot himself.

In a release, Pitt's School of Medicine said Liu, "was an outstanding researcher, who has earned the respect and appreciation of many colleagues in the field, and made unique contributions to science."

"Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications. We will make an effort to complete what he started in an effort to pay homage to his scientific excellence," the department said.

Due to the fact the men are not United States citizens, the case has been forwarded to federal authorities.
