PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh is one of 11 cities being advised to get "aggressive" in response to increases in the percentage of positive COVID-19 test.
The warning came during a teleconference Wednesday. Dr. Deborah Birx with the White House Coronavirus Task Force delivered the private warning.
The Center for Public Integrity reports that isn't the only time local leaders have been warned but not the public.
A week ago, a White House report showing 18 states in the pandemic "red zone" was not released.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald tells KDKA Radio his office was not notified of the advisory and that Health Department Director Dr. Debra Bogen has taken the appropriate mitigation efforts and exactly what the taskforce is suggesting.
Baltimore, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans and St. Louis were also on the list and Fitzgerald has a feeling it is not a coincidence.
"I also have a little bit of uh, let's just say suspicion to why some of those cities might have been listed on that White House Taskforce," said Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald adds good news is that the number of COVID-19 cases in the area appear to be on a downward trend.
