PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The City of Pittsburgh is looking to add cultural competency training for its public safety divisions.
The curriculum would become part of new hire and ongoing training to ensure first responders are equipped to "appropriately understand, respect, interact, protect and respond to our immigrant and refugee communities," according to a release.
As part of this initiative, the city hopes to also find ways of gathering feedback from the community to maintain accountability and help identify any updates that may be needed over the course of time.
The city also wants to develop informational overviews of the immigrant and refugee populations "to increase officers’ understanding and appropriate cultural response when responding in these communities."
The training would fall under the management of Pittsburgh's Multicultural Liaison Unit (MLU) and Mayor Bill Peduto’s Welcoming Pittsburgh plan.
The city is accepting proposals through July 28 at 3:00 pm.
