PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — Technology developed in Pittsburgh uses sound to "see" in space.

Bosch has launched SoundSee to the International Space Station Saturday.

The lunchbox-sized device will ride on small robots around the ISS, using acoustic sensors and artificial intelligence to monitor machine's ambient sounds for any signs of trouble.

"If you keep quiet and hear all the sounds in an environment — the sounds of machines and HVAC systems and all the different environmental processes going around," principle researcher Sam Das told KDKA Radio.

"These sounds, which seem like noise, can tell a lot of stories about the state of the environment."

He says AI is already capable of constantly analyzing audio. Think Siri, Alexa.

SoundSee looks to use that ability to make sure all necessary systems on the ISS are operating correctly. Though it won't replace other monitoring programs already in place.

"Sound is going to be a definitely complimentary technology," Das said.

"Sound can at least give you a first-hand indication; maybe you should go and check it out."

After further research, Das hopes the technology can be used in other industries here on Earth.
