PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A protester who was outside of Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto’s home has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Riot, Disorderly Conduct and other charges.
26-year-old Ian Frazier of Pittsburgh was arrested on Wednesday evening and charged on Thursday.
According to a complaint, Frazer pushed his bicycle toward police and knocked a body camera off an officer while being pleased into custody.
A crowd of up to 100 people marched on Peduto’s Point Breeze residence where the mayor had some discussion with members of the crowd.
Police say the crowd “was getting more and more agitated with the mayor and his responses to their questioning” with marchers using a bullhorn siren while close to Peduto.
After Peduto went inside his house, protesters remained on the property singing, chanting and blaring their bullhorns.
Police gave six orders to disperse and the crowd made its way down Hastings Street toward Mellon Park. The protesters formed a line and stopped moving saying they were no longer moving.
Police say the protesters were in the middle of the intersection of Elysian Street and Fifth Avenue and that the area is a heavy traffic area used by emergency services such as fire and EMS.
Another order was given that the crowd move into the park.
That is where Frazier and others got into a scuffle with police.
Authorites says Frazier used his bike as a weapon and after initially getting away was arrested by police a short time later.
He was booked at Allegheny County Jail and released on his own recognizance.
Video from the park also shows laser pointers being used on officer’s eyes as well as umbrellas as weapons. No other arrests have been made at this time.
Frazier’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 3. He also faces charges of Resisting Arrest and Aggravated Assault.
