PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - With few days remaining in the shortened 2020 season, Friday afternoon's rain storms forced Kennywood Park to close.
The amusement park posted a message to their Facebook page: "Due to inclement weather, Kennywood Park will be closing today at 4:00 pm. Please join us again on one of the remaining days of the summer season: August 29-30 or September 4-7, 2020."
The park opened late this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will close for the remainder of the year on Labor Day, September 7. The park also canceled its yearly Phantom Fright Nights as well as the Holiday Lights Festival.
Idlewild and Sandastle also finish their season on Labor Day.
Earlier this month, Kennywood said a press release that 2020 season passes will be extended into next year.
"To show appreciation for our patrons' patience and support, all Kennywood 2020 Season Passes will be extended to include the 2021 Season, with the exception of the Summer Saver Season Pass. Idlewild Summer Saver Season Passes will be extended through June 30, 2021, and all other Idlewild Passholders will receive the entire 2021 Season as a show of thanks. Guests who previously purchased a 2021 Season Pass extension for either will receive an in-park credit equal to the price paid for the extension product."
New additions to the parks that were schedule for 2020 including the "Steelers Experience" at Kennywood and the "Bombs Away" water slide at Sandcasting are scheduled to debut in 2021.
