PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Romance scams have blossomed in the Pittsburgh area as Valentine's Day approaches.

Most dating apps and websites may be legitimate but some of the people on them are not.

FBI Assistant Special Agent Doug Olsen say the scammers work dating apps and websites.

They may tell the victim how wonderful they are, even send flowers then they have some urgent need for money to get them home or for medical expenses.

“Most commonly the perpetrators are men targeting women over 40 who are divorced, widowed, elderly or disabled,” said Olsen.

In the Pittsburgh region, there have been 346 known victims over the past two years.

They have lost over $3 million locally, $23 million state-wide.

They best advice, Olsen says, don’t give money to someone you’ve never met.
