PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Two black bear cubs, possibly from the same family, struck and killed by vehicles over last weekend.
The first bear cub was hit early Saturday on Tarentum-Culmerville Road in West Deer.
The second cub along Route 8 in Hampton early Sunday.
State Game Commission warden Dan Puhala tells KDKA Radio that's rare.
“Usually get maybe one or two a year,” said Puhala. “They go anywhere from Route 28 over (to Interstate) 79 up by Wexford.”
Puhala says it’s the time of year when adult females push yearlings away and force them to fend for themselves.“We’re going to be getting into the mating season here soon and that’s just part of their natural cycle, (the parents) run them off so they can fend for themselves,” said Puhala.
No report of human injury from either accident.
Pulaha says like deer, bears are most active at dawn and dusk but because they're black, they're even harder to see.
