PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The American Institute of Steel Construction and the National Steel Bridge Alliance have compiled a list of award winning bridges, and the "City of Bridges" is home to 2 winners.
The Warhol Bridge, originally the 7th street Bridge, received the national award for a rehabilitated bridge.
The Engineer for the Warhol Bridge is Michael Baker International, based in Moon, PA.
A special award was given to the Liberty Bridge for resilience.
The AISC says “This bridge, which was originally built in 1929, demonstrated the superior resilience of structural steel with a remarkable recovery from an accidental construction fire.”
The bridge was closed for 24 days in September 2016 after an accidental fire from burning plastic piping damaged a steel beam.
These two bridges follow in the footsteps of the 6th Street Bridge, which won the first competition in 1928.
