PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – One woman is dead and another one is in stable condition after a stabbing at a Port Authority bus stop at Smithfield and Sixth Avenues Wednesday morning.
Police confirm that the unidentified attacker is in custody.
Police Chief Scott Shubert said an undercover police officer was on the scene checking on a sleeping woman at the bus stop when the attacker came up from behind and stabbed the one woman in the neck and attacked the other before the officer was able to subdue him.
One witness on the scene said the woman in stable condition may have been wearing a traditional Muslim Hijab but police said in a statement.
"At this time there is no evidence to suggest that this attack was racially or religiously motivated. The woman at the bus stop was not wearing religious garb, but the second victim may have been wearing a hijab. Police are investigating and will explore all possible motives."
Police reopened 6th Avenue after it was closed for over an hour.
