PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Another cache of Civil War-era cannonballs have been unearthed by construction workers in Lawrenceville.
Pittsburgh Police say back in July the Franjo Construction crew was working on 39th Street between the Allegheny River and Butler Street when they discovered something solid while turning dirt for a new development.
The excavator operator called the bomb squad after recognizing the cannonballs.
The excavator was the same one that discovered 715 cannonballs back in March of 2017, close to the location of the new discovery.
The 2017 discovery was at the Allegheny Arsenal, “an important supply and manufacturing center for the Union Army during the American Civil War.”
It is not yet known how many cannonballs were unearthed in this new discovery but they are property of the U.S. Army.
Police say they are live and “therefore sensitive to certain conditions, such as shock, heat, friction, and impact. As such, the Pittsburgh Police Bomb Squad will handle mitigation of the cannonballs in coordination with the Army.”
A new condominium development is in the works in the location by Milhaus.
