17 new COVID-related deaths in Allegheny County

The Allegheny County Health Department reported 17 new deaths related to the COVID-19 virus on Friday.

The dates of those deaths ranged from January 2 to February 10.

In addition, the county says there are 252 new cases of the virus in the last 24 hours.

Since March 2020, when the pandemic began, there have been 72,699 cases which have resulted in 4,647 hospitalizations and 1,580 deaths.

Earlier this week, the first UK variant of the virus was reported in Allegheny County.

"The Allegheny County Health Department completed case investigation and contact tracing with this person and learned that this person does not know how they contracted the variant," County Heath Director Dr. Debra Bogen said at the time.

She said the news of this new variant should serve as a reinforcement that everyone should double-down on mitigation efforts to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Bogen said supplies of the coronavirus vaccine are still very limited in the county and throughout the state. Governor Tom Wolf on Thursday acknowledged that the rollout of the vaccine in the state needs to be better, but says the supply from the federal government is still a key issue.

President Joe Biden says the U.S. has secured enough vaccine to vaccine "all Americans" by the end of July of this year.
