A 4-year-old girl was killed and a police officer and a gunman were wounded in a shooting St. Clair Township, Ohio.

It happened Wednesday afternoon across the state line from Beaver County.

Officers responding to a call about a man suffering a mental crisis found him walking down a street and when they tried to speak with him he opened fire.

Police returned fire and wounded Joseph Como.

A St. Clair Police officer who was shot in the head was in stable condition after surgery Wednesday night at a Pittsburgh hospital.

St. Clair Township Police have identified the officer as Detective Dakota Wetzel. In a social media post Thursday, police say he remains in stable condition at UPMC Presbyterian.

“According to Chief Brian McKenzie, Detective Wetzel was able to open his eyes and give family members a thumbs up overnight,” St. Clair said in the post. “He remains in intensive care at the hospital but we are optimistic.”

The four-year-old girl was at a nearby dentist office when she was fatally wounded.
