A new safety team is at work Downtown, but they are not law enforcement officers.

This is the first week for 11 people providing hospitality to visitors, observing what's taking place Downtown, calling police if necessary and checking in on businesses and merchants.

It comes amid safety concerns from locals and business owners, who have started to flee the Downtown area in drastically increasing numbers.

There are eight full-time ambassadors, two supervisors and a dispatch officer. They'll be at work daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

They wear uniforms and will be on foot or on bicycles and will not carry weapons or have arrest powers.

The Golden Triangle Ambassadors overseen by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership are trained to perform CPR and to deliver Narcan.

The Downtown Partnership will spend about $1 million a year on the program for the next five years with the help of more than a dozen sponsors.
