Soul, a militant minister and other labor activists were arrested at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in 1985 for trying to lay scrap metal on the altar during a protest over steel-industry layoffs.

A DMS minister was one of three protesters accused of throwing balloons filled with skunk-scented water on people during a dinner at Shadyside Presbyterian.

Soul's brother was a member.

He later filed a $50 million lawsuit against the City of Pittsburgh, then mayor Richard Caliguiri and two steel executives

At the peak of his fame, ten years earlier Soul had a Top-40 hit single "Don't Give Up on Us."

His wife says Soul died surrounded by his family. The cause of death was not announced.
