A winter storm is en route to the city of Pittsburgh and is expected to impact the area later this week.
The City of Pittsburgh announced Tuesday that it is purchasing six new salt trucks and renting six more to help combat the winter weather.
Allegheny County Public Works issued its plan for the winter storm. It will deploy 32 salt trucks in the area when the freezing rain starts early-Thursday morning. The county will provide continuous as the weather continues.
Pretreating the roads will not be an option, according to Allegheny County Public Works. The rain that falls before the temperature drops will wash away any salt crews place on the roads.
As the freezing rain falls, road crews will plan to place extra salt on the roadways to increase traction.
Allegheny County Public Works recommends residents stay home, if at all possible when the roads are slick.
When it's all said and done, this storm is expected to be a mix of sleet, rain and snow overnight on Thursday and into Friday. 2-to-3 inches of snow is also being predicted by meteorologists.
