PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — The Elections Division assured on Thursday that mail-in and absentee ballots are making their way through the mail.
The division announced the drop-off of about 20,000 ballots at the post office on Wednesday, September 23, with another 50,000 ballots planned to be delivered at the end of the day on Thursday.
But now, over-the-counter voting is an option at the Elections Division office located at 542 Forbes Avenue.
Their office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Over-the-counting voting allows a resident to apply for a mail-in or absentee ballot in person.
The application is the same as the one that you would fill out virtually to request a ballot.
Once a resident’s application goes through the confirmation process and is approved, they will be provided with the ballot, along with a security envelope and instructions.
Privacy screens will be present to allow a voter to cast their ballot in secrecy before sealing their vote and returning the security envelope.
Once votes have been cast and documented, they are secured at the Elections Division locations.
Then the ballots are moved to the Elections Warehouse where they are placed under lock and key and camera surveillance until 7 a.m. on Election Day.
That’s when the votes can be officially opened and tallied.
So far, over 314,000 mail-in ballots have been approved in Allegheny County: around 228,000 democratic ballots and about 58,000 republican.
The Elections Division will not be the only location that will be available for over-the-counter voting, either.
