Allegheny County officials concerned COVID cases could rise

Instead of declining, new COVID-19 cases have leveled off in Allegheny County.

The county is seeing an average of 170 cases a day. That's a slight increase over the week before.

Health Director Dr. Debra Bogen is concerned about reports of sports teams holding social gatherings and people hosting parties, in some cases without masks or social distancing.

"As I said last week, we are so close to being able to safely hold such events again, but not quite yet," she said.

Allegheny County Executive is concerned the numbers will start going up again. Rich Fitzgerald says there was a spike in June when the county entered the Green Phase and some people eased off of mitigation efforts.

He said "I hope those are lessons learned that - we're so close, we're a couple months away - that we keep those lessons in mind."

The positivity rate in Allegheny County is around 6%.
