On the 21st, Churchill Borough Council will vote on a developer’s proposal to transform the former Westinghouse Technology and Research Park into an Amazon distribution center.
It would be huge.
A warehouse building with nearly 3 million square feet, employing between 1,000 and 1,500 people.
Vocal opponents protested nearly every time Churchill Council held a public hearing on the proposal.
They say an increase in traffic from an estimated 600 trucks a day will have a negative impact, even though the project includes modifications to the Greensburg Pike exit of the Parkway East to accommodate the increase.
Others residents voiced concerns about noise, light and air pollution. Others say Amazon has a high employee turnover rate.
All this has been well covered in the media, sometimes to the exclusion of the proposal’s benefits, like a significant increase in tax revenue for Churchill, jobs and the repurposing of a property that’s been dormant for too long.
This development could benefit Churchill if it’s done properly. We encourage Council to approve the proposal if they think it can be.
