PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) – In the hopes of deterring crime, traffic cameras were installed at major intersections throughout Beaver County.
“These are license plate readers, so they catch the license plate, the rear of the car as it goes through an intersection,” said David Lozier, Beaver County District Attorney, during the KDKA Radio Morning Show Friday.
They are networked throughout five other counties.
“Say you have a bank robbery, and the people say that there was a green pickup truck and they went south on route 65. The officer standing there can use the laptop from his car, or his cell phone, and he can look for green pickup trucks in the database.”
The police have to follow the equivalent of state police protocols so it is only used for a lawful purpose, Lozier said.
