Tragedy was avoiding on Friday when police in Aliquippa stopped a 10-year-old child with what was believed to be a gun.
Aliquippa Mayor Dwan Walker says police say the boy remove the gun from his waistband as a police cruiser drove by.
Walker says officers quickly located the boy, were able to identify him and notify his mother.
“We are handling the matter through the appropriate legal channels,” said Walker.
Walker used the incident to point out how quickly serious situations can develop.
“While we are grateful that no one was injured, this incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a situation can escalate and how devastating the outcome could have been,” said Mayor Walker. “In a matter of seconds, lives could have been changed forever—those of the child, the officers involved, and countless family members affected by the aftermath.”
Mayor Walker also reminded residents to have conversations with their children about the dangers of guns, “the consequences of their actions, and the importance of making responsible decisions.”
