Pittsburgh's Planning Commission has given the green light to big changes at Market Square.

The last time there was work to upgrade Market Square was in 2010.

The area was closed and it hurt business, but Downtown Pittsburgh Partnership CEO Jeremy Waldrup says no businesses will close during this makeover.

“All the restaurants and retailers that you love will still be open in that space, we’ll have great signage, we’re going to be moving at gangbuster speed,” said Waldrup.

When it’s finished, many of the restaurants will have 100 percent more room for outdoor dining.

“A lot of them moving from 6 to 8 feet to 12 to 16 feet, of outdoor dining space,” said Waldrup.

Waldrup says they want to get started April 1 with the goal of having the work done before the NFL Draft in April of 2026.
