This week Canon-McMillian School District announced it’s reducing screen time in the classroom. Superintendent Dr. Greg Taranto tells KDKA Radio kindergarten through 2nd grade will be Chromebook-free learning areas, pointing to new research that shows kids learn better with direct, face-to-face interaction with teachers.

Dr. Taranto adds screen-time is being reduced at all grade levels and the school district is buying physical textbooks instead of digital versions.

We applaud Canon-Mac’s decision to reduce screen-time in the classroom. Kids are inundated with phones, tablets and video games all day long and research shows too much screen-time can be detrimental to a child’s development.

Dr. Taranto says this isn’t an elimination of its technical and computer classes but more of what he calls a ‘return to center’ and not relying on screens for everything.

We hope other local districts soon follow suit and shift their learning that best benefits the students and lets teachers teach.
