City council approves Peduto's COVID-19 sick leave plan

Pittsburgh City Council has voted unanimously to approve Mayor Bill Peduto's COVID-19 paid sick leave proposal.

The plan will will allow thousands of employees across the city to get additional paid time off if they test positive for the coronavirus or are exposed.

This sick leave would be handled separately from the city's existing paid sick days and would remain in place until the city's emergency declaration is lifted.

Peduto proposed the plan in late November. At the time he said, "Due to failed federal action, workers should not have to choose between their family's health during a worldwide pandemic and their ability to pay their bills.

"In Pittsburgh we're used to stepping up when Washington fails, and will do so again to protect our people from COVID-19."
