The Keith-Holmes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 402 spent Memorial Day dedicating a Coraopolis park updated in 2019.

The dedication for the Veterans of Foreign Wars War Memorial Park was initially scheduled for last year, but VFW Post 402 board president Steve Miller said the pandemic prevented it from happening.

"We've been held back from being able to do a proper dedication," he said. "We normally hold a full parade every year, and with the parade being canceled due to lack of participation, we felt that this was a good time to hold this event."

The original park was installed at the corner of Fifth Ave. and Mulberry St. in 1973.

In 2019, Post 402 said they decided to update the park to make it safer, easier to maintain and more inclusive. The updated park is now fully interactive and honors all six branches of the military.

"We want to make sure that the community realizes that we're here serving everybody in the community to include area veterans to make sure that they get the benefits that they need and deserve coming back from battlefields," Miller said.

According to Miller, updating the park cost $110,000. He said nearly 40 percent of the upgrades were paid for by the most successful fundraiser in Post 402 history.
