Allegheny County Police back Downtown, only a week after announcing patrols ending

Just one week after Allegheny County Police announced they were ending patrols downtown, they're back.

Patrols ended last week as the city planned to increase its own police presence downtown, but county police cars were spotted in the area Monday.

Originally city police officers from Zone 2 were ramping up their patrols to help out with the Downtown safety.

But now, County Executive Rich Fitzgerald confirmed Allegheny resumed downtown patrols.

"We're back and when the city needs us and when they asked us to continue our patrolling of streets downtown, the Smithfield's, the Woods streets, the Liberty avenue, the Penn avenue, Market Square, yeah we're helping out and we're going to continue to do that," explained Fitzgerald.

A Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson said it was a collaborative decision between the city and county, adding the partnership has been an asset to the downtown area.

A downtown public safety center is still being planned to be established.
