Rangers at Frick Park received a report on Wednesday morning from the Department of Public Works about coyotes attacking a dog.

Pittsburgh Public Safety tells KDKA Radio the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. when a black dog was attacked by two coyotes.

The dog was off leash during the attack.

Animal Control Officers were unable to find the dog or coyotes.

“The officers did speak to a couple DPW employees who told them that they thought they heard some loud yelping out in the woods, but couldn't provide a specific location,” Public Safety said.

It’s unknown if the dog is a stray. An owner has not been found.

On Thursday, another dog owner reported a coyote approached her dog, but left it alone.

“Coyotes are sometimes seen in the park and they are known to attack deer normally. The rangers strongly encourage owners to keep dogs on a leash while inside the park,” Public Safety said.

Coyotes have also been reported in many neighborhoods around the Pittsburgh area.

The Wildest has the following tips if you come across a coyote:

1.     Stop and stand still

2.     Make yourself big

3.     Be loud and assertive

4.     Slowly back away

5.     NEVER turn your back and run
