Pittsburgh Firefighters battled a 5-alarm fire in the basement of the Gulf Tower in downtown Pittsburgh Wednesday morning.
Crews were able to contain the fire to the basement where a transformer fire started before 9:30am Wednesday morning.
Just after 11:30am, the fire was declared under control by Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones.
Smoke seen rising from the top of the building is being forced out through the building's ventilation system.
Jones told NewsRadio KDKA that in high-rise buildings like the Gulf Tower, it's very difficult for a fire to leap floors.
Crews evacuated occupants of the building. One firefighter was taken to a hospital with chest pains.
