KDKA Radio Editorial: Downtown is Looking Up

In the past week, owners of the famous Weiner World on Strawberry Way heavily contemplated closing their doors after nearly 60 years of serving food at their Pittsburgh downtown location.

The open drug use and the turning a blind eye on the homeless situation downtown has made it extremely difficult for businesses to operate effectively.

But that may have all changed late this week thanks in large part to the Big K Morning Show who continued to discuss the issue on their program and getting the ears and attention of the leaders in our region.

A meeting was held with the county human services department in addition to the public safety director, the assistant Pittsburgh Police Chief and the commander of the zone two Pittsburgh Police.

The plan calls for a new police zone downtown that will pair up social workers with officers to intervene when police may not be needed and when people are having drug and alcohol addiction issues.

We commend both Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey for their tremendous efforts!
