It was an emotional weekend in Ukraine as the invasion by Russia continues. A local man with connections to both Pittsburgh and Ukraine shared his story Monday morning with NewsRadio KDKA.
Roman Lewkowicz is a Duquesne grad with family in Ukraine.
He says while his family lives in a city not yet threatened by Russia troops, his wife's family had to flee from Kyiv, looking for safety in bomb shelters and the subway.
"She's been a mess. I had to tell her to turn off the TV, just because it's not healthy for her. It's not good for the kids to see why their mom is crying. It's difficult for us to comprehend. It makes no sense."
He says the outmanned, outgunned Ukrainians will continue to fight, already slowing the Russian advance.
"I'm just terrified of the human loss, because Russia has no business being there. Any conflict Ukraine has amongst themselves in what President they elect, or decided to oust out of office, has nothing to do with Russia," Lewkowicz said.
Meanwhile, prayer services and rallies continue across the country for Ukraine. In Pittsburgh over the weekend, hundreds gathered to call for peace.
