'Fairness in Women’s Sports Act' moves forward in Pennsylvania House

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio KDKA) - The Pennsylvania House Education Committee approved the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act Tuesday.

The bill is intended to prohibit transgender female athletes from competing in women’s sports in school.

State Rep. Valerie Gaydos, a former school athlete, is a prime sponsor of House Bill 972.

"The legislation is about preserving fairness and protecting women's sports," Gaydos said during the KDKA Radio Morning Show Wednesday. "This bill does not ban transgenders from playing sports, it does not ban them from playing sports. What it does, is it requires biological males to play on men's teams, and biological women to play on women's teams."

Those against the bill say it's dangerous and harmful to transgender students. In a social media post Tuesday, the ACLU of Pennsylvania said it intends to fight the bill.

Governor Wolf has stated he will veto the bill if it reaches his desk.
