It’s been 20 years in the making and the day finally arrived Wednesday.

Real ID officially began at 12:01, meaning if you want to get through an airport security line or into a federal government building, you need and updated ID or passport.

But, after months and years of the looming deadline and possible issues on day one, things went “very, very smoothly” at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Airport spokesperson Bob Kerlik tells KDKA Radio that people without a Real ID or approved ID are subject to “additional screening”, but not being turned away.

That was also what a TSA employee told KDKA Radio’s Andrew Limberg at Pittsburgh International Airport on Tuesday.

There was a bit of confusion on Monday after TSA made some changes to security lines.

All TSA PreCheck users must now use the main security area.

All other customers can use either the main or alternate checkpoints.

But, there may be some times when non-TSA PreCheck customers are asked to go to the alternate checkpoint, during busy, early morning hours.
