Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald says the closing of the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center had nothing to do with him.
Some blame the administration for the closing of the facility, and for the increase in juvenile crime.
But on the Big K Morning Show on NewsRadio KDKA, Fitzgerald called it a false narrative, saying it was the state that revoked the license to the facility:
"Nothing can be further from the truth," said Fitzgerald. "I wanted to keep it open. The State decided to close it. It was a state decision.
I have no role in that, we wanted to keep it open, they took it away from us."
Fitzgerald says the county is trying to help the state and the courts come up with a solution by offering to provide the building that formerly housed juvenile detention, if they want to relocate it in Allegheny County.
Shuman was closed in September 2021 after its license was revoked.
