First it was election meddling. Now we're hearing more and more about hackers trying to target local residents and businesses.

Scott Brady, former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, just left office and is now working with a private firm representing businesses trying to crack down on white collar crime.

He was a guest on the KDKA Radio Morning Show and says that cybercrime is definitely on the rise.

"We've seen, especially during COVID, an explosion of consumer-based fraud, targeting individuals. And there are hackers around the world, unfortunately, and they have access to people in western Pennsylvania.

"That was one of the reasons why Josh Shapiro and I stood up the first in the nation COVID fraud taskforce and it became the model for other states and other partnerships," he said.

It's not just individuals. He says hackers are also targeting retailers and hospitals more during this pandemic.

He says foreign entities are our biggest threat.

"Nation-states pose a huge threat - Russia, China - every company in western Pennsylvania, the federal, state government; all of them are being targeted," said Brady. "It's pretty scary stuff."

Brady announced his resignation from office last month. He was appointed by then President Donald Trump and was sworn in on January 14, 2017. His resignation was effective February 28.
