PITTSBURGH (Newaradio KDKA) - The buffalo in South Park have been a popular topic on the KDKA Radio Morning Show over the last several weeks.
Larry and Kevin often wonder how the mammals arrived at the Allegheny County park.
"In 1927, a county commissioner purchased 18 buffalo and had them brought here when they were developing South Park," said Chris Roland with Allegheny County Parks. "They brought them here to conserve them and make sure they were able to continue to live. They were worried about extinction at the time."
The buffalo have been a staple of the area ever since. There are currently seven buffalo (one baby) and one bull.
Larry was hoping North Park would adopt some of the buffalo, but that wish will not come true.
"Allegheny County - when they were developing the parks - each park had their own unique feature, and it was to encourage residents in Allegheny County to travel throughout the county to go to each park and to see what they offer," Roland said. "Each park has a different theme and a different idea."
North Park has the lake, Boyce Park has a ski lodge and Roundhill Park has other animals to attract visitors.
