How to be prepared for house fires as winter approaches

House fires are more common in the winter months, here's the details on how you can be prepared.

The American Red Cross is putting a big emphasis on creating a two-minute drill to get you out of your house fast.

Spokesperson Nicole Roschella says along with finding at least two ways to exit each room and pick a family meeting spot, families with young kids may need to take some extra steps.

"Teaching children, first, what a smoke alarm sounds like; so, they're not going to panic when they hear that loud noise and that they're going to be able to jump into action with that muscle memory," suggests Roschella.

The Red Cross responds to 33 percent more house fires in colder months. Over the past 48 hours there have been three confirmed fires in the Pittsburgh area.

"Fires actually travel through homes faster now. That's largely due to having an open concept layout and using synthetic materials in homes," Roschella explains.
