The 800-pound statue of the 15th-century explorer was built in 1958 and has been at the center of a years-long legal battle.

Mayor Ed Gainey and his administration says it is reviewing the opinion and looking at the next steps moving forward.

For now, the statue, which has been vandalized numerous times, remains standing and wrapped in plastic, as it has for nearly two years.

The statue was constructed by Italian American sculptor Frank Vittor.

In 2020, when the plastic wrapping was applied, the Pittsburgh Art Commission voted unanimously to remove the statue.
