Is your pet obsessed with your Christmas tree? Veterinarian Dr. Mike Hutchinson of Animal General in Cranberry Township warns pet owners that Christmas trees can hazardous to your pet's health.

"If they chew on the bark, they can start getting vomiting, diarrhea, probably not going to kill them, just cause an upset stomach, but you have to watch out for the water with the additives because that can be toxic," said Dr. Mike.

He recommends keeping the tree out of reach, and if that's not possible, try some deterrent.

When they cross a certain line, there could be a citronella spray that goes off or an air horn, that will scare you too, but sometimes that will keep the dog away just that first year until they realize, okay, not a good place to go," said Dr. Hutchinson.

He says try providing them with alternative toys, and if all else fails, you're might have to remove the tree.

Another thing to keep in mind is making sure your dog doesn't get into any of the candy, chocolate or other holiday treats.

Also, with dangerous cold weather, it's important to remember to keep an eye on your pets if they are outside.

Outdoor dogs need a dry, warm shelter along with food and unfrozen water.

Dr. Mike says to keep an eye on your dog when they are outside.

He also recommends calling your local animal control or PA SPCA if you see a neighbor's dog left out in the cold.
