Local volunteers start return from hurricane Ian relief

Local volunteers are returning from Florida after helping Hurricane Ian victims.

Bob Gurkweitz of Cranberry Township has been on 10 disaster relief operations through the American Red Cross.

Most recently, he drove an emergency response vehicle from Pittsburgh to Florida to help deliver hot meals and relief supplies to those hit hardest by the storm. It's clear the emotion of the trip is still raw.

“In the trailer parks, I’ll tell you these people are friendly, they help each other, they’re good people,” A choked up Gurkweitz remarked.

George Martinez is the Interim CEO of the Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania. He says volunteers are still needed as many continue picking up the pieces.

“We don’t know when we’re going leave there are still hundreds of people in shelters. We have the emergency response vehicles that are going out and feeding folks, there’s casework that still needs to happen. I can see us being there through January, which is one of the dates I’ve heard floated out.”

The Red Cross sent several volunteers from Pittsburgh to Florida. Some were in charge of delivering hot meals and relief supplies to the hardest hit areas.
