It's the end of the road for one of Oakland's longest-standing restaurants.
After nearly 30 years in business, Spice Island Tea House, located on Atwood Street, will close at the end of the week.
Owner Ron Lee tells the Post-Gazette he decided to close the Thai restaurant for a variety of reasons, including burnout from the physical demands of restaurant work, staffing shortages, and the fluctuating prices on ingredients.
The last day of dine-in service is Thursday and the last day for take-out is Saturday.
“When we first opened in 1995, never in our wildest dreams did we think we would go on this long,” The restaurant said in a Facebook post.
The post also thanked its loyal customers who kept them doing.
“Admittedly, the last few years have been the hardest we’ve ever faced.”
The post goes on to say they are looking at other opportunities, including pop-ups and other events.
