Some potentially good news on the medical front.

We've been hearing a lot recently about tick-borne diseases, in particular an emerging deer tick virus that can cause Meningitis and Encephalitis in people, which can be transmitted within 15 minutes.

On the NewsRadio KDKA morning show, Cranberry Township veterinarian Dr. Mike Hutchinson announced a major breakthrough in slowing the spread of these diseases:

"Now scientists have come up at Penn State University have come up with a way to edit genes in ticks that could prevent them in transmitting these diseases to us and to our pets."

The study is the first to demonstrate genetic modification in ticks. The team's findings are published in the iScience journal.
