A Karns City man faces animal cruelty charges after he admitted to abandoning a dog for over 12 hours last month.
Pennsylvania State Police say a 64-year-old man told Troopers last week that he left the dog, named “Libby” outside of the Butler County Humane Society in a crate.
Libby was left out in the cold from around 6 p.m. until it was found at 7 a.m., in temperatures near freezing.
Troopers were able to find the identity of the man responsible after receiving several tips.
Police say Libby, renamed “MERCY” but the Humane Society staff, was treated and is doing well.
“She is with us and thriving,” said Cari Ciancio Executive Director of the BCHS.
Mercy will be adopted out when they believe she is ready and Ciancio says they will make sure she goes to the home that’s best for Mercy.
“We will place Mercy in a home that matches what her needs are, whatever they may be,” said Ciancio. “Maybe she can’t be in a home with a cat. We don’t know.”
While Mercy isn’t up for adoption yet, the Humane Society has many other dogs and cats looking for their forever home.
