New York man faces charges after trying to derail a train in Springdale

A New York man faces felony charges after allegedly trying to derail a train in Springdale.

Springdale police say 34-year-old Scott Andrew Heffner of Friendship, New York, moved two tractor-trailers from the PPG Paints plant onto nearby railroad tracks early Sunday morning.

Investigators say Heffner told officers his phone was “talking to him,” instructing him to block the tracks and cut power behind the building.

Surveillance video shows him using the trucks and even getting into a borough street sweeper.

Heffner was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including risking a catastrophe and theft.

He’s being held in the Allegheny County Jail without bail and is due in court November 17.
