A Homestead man accused of killing a Jefferson Hills police officer while driving intoxicated pleaded guilty Monday.
25-year-old Zachary Foltz was behind the wheel on June 3, 2020 when he crossed into the opposite lane on Old Clairton Road, and crashed into a police car driven by officer Dale Provins.
Provins died 10 days later. According to a criminal complaint, testing showed Foltz had a blood alcohol level of .107% and had THC, cocaine metabolite and ketamine in his system.
He pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle while DUI. He was sentenced to 3-to-6 years in prison.
In a Facebook post Monday, the Jefferson Hills Police Department said the plea gives them some closure.
"While this sentence will not replace Dale, it gives us, as well as Dale’s family and friends, some closure. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the successful prosecution for Officer Provins’ case, in particular Deputy District Attorney Kevin Chernosky, the prosecuting attorney for the Commonwealth, and Upper St. Clair Police Sergeant Robert McMaster, who filed the charges in this case on behalf of the SHACOG Accident Reconstruction Team.
RIP Officer Provins. We will never forget.
