The Post-Gazette reports that the incline, which carries passengers between Station Square and Mount Washington, will be closed next year from August 1 to November 11 while crews replace the mechanical guts of the system and the bridge supports that hold the track.
The stations at each end will also be upgraded.
Built in 1870, the Monongahela Incline is the United States’ oldest continuingly operating funicular.
The other operating incline in the city in the Duquesne Incline.
In addition, all nine subway escalators will be replaced over a two-year period at the Wood Street, Steel Plaza and First Avenue Stations.
The Port Authority's price tag for those projects is nearly $22 million.
