The Environmental Integrity Project and Clean Air Council filed a notice of intent to sue the company for illegal emissions.

Sarah Kula, the attorney for the two groups, says the emissions are putting people in the area at risk.

“These pollutants contribute to smog and can cause nausea, nerve damage and other health problems,” said Kula. “[Volatile organic compounds] are a class of harmful air pollutants that can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and loss of coordination.”

The lawsuit claims the plan has emitted 512 tons of VOC in one month and is just four tons shy of their 12-month permit limit.

A Shell spokesperson said they're reviewing the notice and are committed safe, environmentally responsible operations.
